Bring the First Quilt You Ever Made!!

That was the theme for show-and-tell at the Dixie Quilt Guild in St. George, Utah last Saturday!!  We had our meeting a week early because the St. George Marathon is the first Saturday in October and it is such a huge event that it really takes over St. George for most of that Saturday.

Here are some of the "first" quilts that were shared:

It was so much fun to see these quilts and hear the stories about how they came into existance and when they were made.  You can kind of get a taste for the time period some of these quilts were started just by looking at the colors!!!  One of the ladies said her first quilt was made out of polyester!!  Oh my!!!  The Quilt Cops would be all over her case today, wouldn't they??  :-)

Now, here are some of the recently completed quilts that were shared.  Quite the difference, eh??

Now this quilt (above) was supposed to be the mistake quilt but silly me I think it is wonderful!!!  Since it was not as the quilter wanted, she made the quilt below.  Now, I know there is a huge difference just by the fabrics she chose but I would still eat crackers and read a book under the top quilt!!  I offered to take the mistake quilt off her hands but she would have nothing to do with that offer!!
Now, this one is going to be a class here in St. George!!! I just might have to sign up for this one!!  :-)
This one was HUGE!!!
What a difference a few decades make!!!  The colors in fabric that we now have!!!  The variety of patterns!!!  We are truly blessed to be quilters in this day and age!!  Will they be saying the same thing about us in 2050??  How many of us out there will ever know??  Just a thought!!!

Welcome to Autumn

This is my most favorite time of year!!!  Well, most years.  But this year, living in St. George, Utah, there is no sign of fall anywhere!!!  Its sunny and 90 degrees today and all next week it is supposed to be in the 100s.  My darling friend, Regena, was kind enough to call me (actually she was bragging - LOL!!!) on her way to school this morning to let me know that there was a bit of snow on top of Pike's Peak - the huge mountian that lies just west of Colorado Springs, my home before moving to St. George.
I love the four seasons with fall being the very best!!!  I hope that wherever you live you are enjoying life and the views that surround you!!  And for all my friends down under - happy spring!!!

And Then - A New Quilt Is Born!!!

This Vanishing 9-Patch pattern is so fun because you can watch it grow from step to step and then the final piece is always soooooooooo fun:
and because I love bright and lime green, I am going to back and bind this quilt
with Kaffe Fassett's Asha in Lime:
Oh, and did I mention, I used all my Kaffe Fasset fabrics in this quilt!?!?! :-)))

A New Quilt Is On It's Way!!!

How is it that I never tire of watching a bunch of fabric on a bunch of bolts turn into a quilt??  It is one of the most enjoyable parts of my life!!!

A bunch of fabric first turned into 20 of these:

and then these 20 blocks turned into this:
and then this turned into 20 of these:

This past Saturday was the first meeting of the Dixie Quilt Guild, the guild here in St. George, Utah.  It was so much fun to get back in the swing.  This is my first full year in this guild and it is a very busy guild, plus the women here are the most amazing artisans!!

Each year the guild has a "Challenge Quilt."  This year the challenge is put on by the quilters down in Mesquite, NV (they travel 45 miles to come to our guild meetings).  And what a fun twist they have added to the challenge.  We are to go to a paint counter (at one of the big box stores ore Ace or wherever there are paint color samples) and pick out colors that have one of the three initials in our name in the paint swatch's name.  For example, my first initial is "A" so I chose a color called "Retro Avocado."  So, here are all the "A" colors I found:
The lady who was presenting the idea said that one of her initials is "K" and that she had a heck of time finding any swatches with the letter "K."  Well so did I:
and not the greatest colors either, if you ask me.  I love bright!!!

And so, if "K" was so hard, I was thinking that "Y," my last initial, would be pretty hard too.  I was guessing, before I started, that "yellow" was going to be about the only "Y" colors I would find.  Well, bingo, I was right - except one of the yellows was "Egg Yolk" and even though it is yellow, it didn't have yellow in the name!!!
Now, we can add 3 more colors (any color we choose and they don't have to be an "initial" color).  So, since the "K" colors and the "Y" colors are limited, I am going to have to rely on the "A" colors to give me the perfect combination with the help of the added colors.  Stayed tuned!!

Oh, Oh!! I'm Turning into a Computer Geek!!!

Since school has started I have had little time to work on any quilting.  Boo!!  Hoo!!  I am only taking two classes, but both classes are very time-consuming!!!  I am taking a writing class - very basic but very good, AND the second class is a basic computer programming class!!  I love it!!!  Here is the first program I wrote:
On the left side is all the code I wrote in order to make the little robot, down in the left-hand corner of the picture on the right, move around my initial K and go back to his little spot in the corner.  When you hit the play button, the little robot moves around the letter leaving the little trail you see and dropping "beepers" at each corner!!!  This is so much fun, it is like giving ice cream to a baby!!!  Maybe some day I can write a quilt program!!  Oh, wait, don't hold your breath!!  :-)
