Oh, absolutely! I recall going on a field trip once (think it was a school field trip, but maybe it was Brownies) to the local telephone company building and we got to go peek at the operators. My neighbor thought she was so special because her aunt was there working. :) It was less than 1/2 mile from my home.

Not only am I old enough but I was an operator with Northwestern Bell and also an overseas operator with Pacific Bell!!
