Each summer I invite 3-4 middle school aged girls to come down to my studio and learn to sew and to make a small quilt. We usually do a vanishing 9-patch, making 4 blocks, creating a perfect size wall hanging. We start with the basics of fabric selection, cutting, sewing and actually quilting their own quilts on my Tierra quilting machine and then learning how to properly put on a binding and a label.
Well, two summers ago, Marissa was one of the young women who came to learn to quilt. Once the classes were over, she never got back to finishing her quilt. So, her Mom and a dear neighbor took Marissa's 4 blocks, added more and finished a large lap quilt for her.
This week I have been quilting it and putting the binding on. Marissa's birthday is June 1 and she will be sweet sixteen!! She has NO idea she is getting this quilt!! How fun is that!!

What a great quilt and I'm sure it will be well received. Just love the disappearing 9 patch
What a good idea teaching young quilters from the start to the finish of a quilt.
